Kayla

This time, no footsteps followed me. He still never admitted to being an alien, but he didn’t deny it either. Anyway, I just needed to move on. There was too much work for me to do to worry about aliens. Later on I’ll have a major panic attack that aliens exist. My mind drifted to his vampire teeth. Are they here to consume us? Will he eat me?

Walking towards the primary activities, another assistant ran up to me, flailing her arms. I could feel the anxiety building inside me as I tried to stay focused. I knew that something was wrong, and I was the only one who had the power to fix it. It’s crucial that I remain cool and collected. I wasn’t sure if I would survive this night at this rate.

“Kayla, I need help with the apple cider!”

“What happened to your helper? I know I assigned someone to help you.”

“I know you did, but she had to go home. She had an emergency with her cat.”

“Emergency with her cat? Is the cat okay?”

“Oh, she said her cat was sleeping on the wrong bed, like there are multiple cat beds, so she needs to move the cat to the right bed.”

I blinked. What did she say? “She left work to fix a cat bed situation?” I shook my head. “So the cat is okay? Everyone’s okay? No one’s dead? No one is hurt?”

It was getting really hard to control my emotions, but I had to because I was a professional. Even though I was not a professional party planner.

“Oh, I’ve talked to her. All I know is that’s what she said, so she left and now I need help. There’s so many people!”

I sighed and pressed my fingers against my temples. “Okay then. I guess I’ll come help you. When is the apple cider booth closing?”

“In about twenty minutes.”

“So, who’s been watching it since you came to find me?”

“Oh well, I left a sign.”

“Okay. We’ve got to hurry back to the station and get you fixed.”

We hurried back to the apple cider booth and started dishing out the drinks. There was a line waiting for us to re-open the booth. After a few minutes, a body pressed between us and I looked up. It was Taxlyz. He grinned at me as he picked up a ladle.

“Do you need help?”

I was speechless and nodded. With Taxlyz’s help, we closed the booth, and I sent her to another booth to man. Slipping away from the crowd, I walked to the edge of the forest to sit down and take a breath.

Except it wasn’t a breath at all.

All the stress fell over me, and I lost it. Tears streamed down my face as I leaned on my knees. I shouldn’t be doing all this by myself. It wasn’t even that the work was hard. It was meeting my boss’s expectations and trying to keep everyone calm. I knew there were going to be severe cuts soon, which was why I suggested this event.
